God, I can’t believe we actually ran into Oliver and his wife—with her baby bump—and their dog. Talk about looking like the perfect family. They’re not though. If they were, he wouldn’t have been sleeping with me behind her back.

“Want to get out of here?” Matt asks, and I nod, not sure I can find my words. I hate that I’m upset. I’m over him, and I want to feel nothing, but that’s hard to do when he just walked by me, as well as his sweet baby girl. Madelyn is better off not knowing him, or knowing how he rejected her. I don’t need her growing up with deep rooted abandonment issues, like I have.

Matt stands and cleans up our mess as I get Madelyn back in her stroller. We’re both silent, lost in our own thoughts as we walk, and while we’re not verbally communicating, he puts his arm around me to give comfort, and I’m so happy he’s with me right now. His presence is quiet, but comforting.

We reach my house, and I pull Madelyn from her seat. Normally I have to set her inside, and go back and get her stroller but Matt carries it up and sets it on the stoop. I have the oddest feeling he’s going to run, and I should let him. I open the door, and he has a questioning look on his face.

“She’ll be going to sleep soon. Want to come in and study with me?” I give him a small smile and work to lighten the mood by saying, “There’s this payment for the Beaver Tail we have to discuss.”

He grins, and nods. “When you put it like that.” He reaches out and wipes something from my face. I raise a questioning brow and he explains, “Apple filling.”

I give a humorless laugh. “I’m a mess, I can’t believe you’d want to be seen with me.”

“No, you’re not, Kennedy,” he says his voice low and husky, and honest. “You’re kind of perfect.”

I’m not great at accepting compliments, so I just laugh it off, but every moment I spend with him, he’s proving to be very sweet and kind. I’m pretty sure there’s more to Matt, but I know better than to think there can be more to us.

“Come on.” We walk inside, and I get Madelyn a drink before turning on her favorite evening cartoon. Matt plunks in the chair beside the sofa and within minutes he’s engrossed in the show.

“Do you want something to drink, Matt?”

“Shh,” he teases. “I’m trying to get caught up.”

I roll my eyes. “Can you watch her for a second? I’m going to run up and get my books.”

“Sure,” he agrees, and it’s weird how much I trust him with my daughter, and it happened really quickly. I just need to be careful she doesn’t get too used to Maf, get too comfortable with his presence. I grab my music sheets and pencil and head back down. Matt is laughing at something on the TV
